Businessman Review

One word :Intensity 

In the type of society and culture we live in, we are taught to be jack-of-all things trivial, learn some morals here and there from religion ,study some things in school,get some gyan from someone,get a job , be an average ideal man ,never push too many buttons,risk taking strictly not allowed .

This all-roundeness and non-specificity also creeps in to our movies(Telugu /Hindi /Indian),we need songs,we need fights ,we need comedy, of course we need family values and religion and of course an occasional statement on how goodness and God is on the side of the all powerfull thigh slapping hero , and we cannot make movies which stick to one thing with intensity ,something which the koreans and japanese movie -makers have perfected .

When I went into the theatre ,I expected it to be formula movie with the typical puri elements ,but no .

seems like Puri Jagannadh had a Vengeance with a Capital 'V' filled in his heart , we can call it 'kasi' telugu .A vengeance to overwrite the rules of charcter ,overwrite the rules of a standard telugu movie ,we can see his vengeful intensity in every dialogue sprouted and every scene in the movie .

when they said the movie has received 'A' certification from the censor board ,I had a smile on my face ,because its puri's way of saying 

"I am not pussyfooting my story for the sake of censors, the story is what it is ,I wont cut parts to make it suit a family or kids ,be mature enough to see 

it for what it is or do not come to the theatre".

Coming to the story it's a fierce charcter study of one man ,there is no side story to waver us ,no comedians or family to side track the story ,there is the heroine ,but she is the perfect plot device ,It is an out and out negative portrayal done heroically .and there are the songs as well, but it seems to have been a production compulsion so they do not interfere in the story 

Mahesh :What many liked in 'pokiri' would have been the fights and the songs ,but perhaps what was more intersting and gripping was the intesity of hero's character especially in dialogues or discussions ,puri put the same thing on steroids and the result we see is like a drug in its pure un-adulterated form.

The character was brilliantly dark and negative ,This is what a hallmark of a good charcterisation should be , we must be able to root for the actor even when he is negative ,even when the things he says offend our regular 'moral code' ,we have a very few actors  in India who can take a negative role at such a point in their career and even fewer who can look spell binding in such roles ,we are lucky to have Mahesh.

Some say  it is like a leone movie ,I think it is more a kurosawa movie .

Dialogues:They are not witty one liners or long lectures but they are Intense lines with a tinge of gleeful nihilism and anarchy added into them some samples from what i seem to remember 

"Nenu oka kukka ni odili ,idi ellina illu anni navi antey adi pedda tappu antaru ,Andey pujalu chesi oka gurranni odili adi tirigina bhoomi antha naadey evaranna addu osthey narikesta antey ,danni pedda yagam antaru dani gurinchi goppaga cheppukuntaru "

"Tv lo puli nunchi jinka tappinchu kuntey ,hammayya ani TV kattesi elli kodi ni koosukuni tintaru ,acutual gaa janalaki jinka meeda gani ,kodi meeda gani jali ledu ,puli meeda asuya anthey ,puli ni emi peeka leru ani kullu "

"Devudu emi iyyadu ani telistey ee pujalu chestava ,pujalu kooda business transaction "

"kanipiyyateldu gani naku devudi meeda kooda kasi undi "

Others : Other actors are ok  ,I liked dharmavarapu's parts especially .some of babjis expressions were also funny if you watch them carefully.

Nassar ,shide and prakash raj did their usual roles, not too difficult for them.There are no comedy charcters in the movie but the dialogues craete laughter many times .

camera:Good work ,we see more close face shots of mahesh in this movie than ever before and all of them were captured with the right intensity.

Thaman :Background rocks again ,songs are ok.

Neagatives:Songs are good but i did not like the placement,They should have kept the herione- songs only in the album and cut them off completely from the second half ,and they should change the dance director .

And mahesh has only one runnning bit in this movie,I expected more running  :-) 

Advice to movie goers : 

The are no divine 'duties' for a director, any director has the right to put offensive material in his movie ,the censors job is to give a rating for the material and then release it to the audience ,when the censors have given a 'A' rating and the trailers show clearly that it would have a mafia backdrop ,why the f**k do parents bring their kid's and women and cry "family movie kadu ",Would you take a child to any adult english movie with 'A' rating and then cry about family values ????? WTF ....

And also why in hells name are censors blurring womens thighs in some shots ,as if for the first time in the history of telugu cinema someone is showing womens skin ,I saw more skin show in many 'family oriented' movies than this.

Final word :My rating 4 ,but full marks to mahesh and puri
